These Notes on Nomenclature were made by J.R.R. Tolkien to assist translators of The Lord of the Rings into other languages. They were composed when only the Swedish and Dutch translations had appeared. They have been revised for publication by Christopher Tolkien. All references to The Lord of the Rings in the Guide are by volume and page of the Second (Revised) Edition.
Previously published in A Tolkien Compass (Jared Lobdell ed.), the Guide is now republished in The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull.
