Fourth Age 171 (abbreviated to Fo.A. 171 or F.O.) is the 171st year of the Sun of the Fourth Age of Middle-earth. Unless otherwise stated, Tolkien Gateway follows Shire usage in Appendix B for reckoning Fourth Age years: Fourth Age 171 was also known as S.R. 1592 in Shire-reckoning.
Notable events in this year include:
- A copy of the Red Book of Westmarch is completed in Gondor by Findegil, the King's Writer.[1]
Note
The Note on the Shire Records initially gave this date only as "IV 172," but the 50th Anniversary Edition added a note that the year was also S.R. 1592, which corresponds to Fo.A. 171 in the Shire Reckoning. Therefore the originally stated year of 172 must refer to the New Reckoning of Gondor and the copy must have been completed after 25 March S.R. 1592 (the New Year in Gondor).
