Tolkien Gateway > Forums > Are the Hobbit and LOTR films Trilogies?

I often see the 2 film series, The Hobbit and LOTR (and sometimes The LOTR books) referred to as Trilogies, my understanding and the term Trilogy in storytelling is of 3. Distinct stories each with a beginning, middle and ending, linked by characters, place, plot, theme or other device, whereas both The Hobbit (the film) and LOTR are one continuous story split into 3 parts, and therefore not Trilogies. This is just me musing and maybe being pedantic. Unsigned comment by Peteall2757 (talk • contribs).

This is definitely you being pedantic. I could know, I'm a pedant myself. However, language belongs to the users, and over time, anything that comes in threes has been referred to as a trilogy. In the case of LotR and tH, it's a hypercorrection. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 12:39, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
