This chapter tells the story of the fall of [[Smaug]]. In this chapter, a thrush comes to [[Esgaroth]] and tells [[Bard the Bowman]] the open patch in Smaug's armour. He uses the black arrow to shoot down the dragon. As he is thought to have died in the village, when he returns to his people they are in awe. The people of Esgaroth wish to make Bard the King, but the [[Master of Lake-town]] convinces them to turn their anger from him to [[Thorin and Company]]. The chapter closes when [[Thranduil]] and some of his army come to the people of Lake-Town.
