J.R.R._Tolkien_-_Lake_Mithrim.jpg(800 × 287 pixels, file size: 44 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

This watercolour by J.R.R. Tolkien, dated 1927, was published in The Silmarillion Calendar 1978, together with the heraldic devices of Fëanor, Fingolfin, Hador, and Eärendil, who were associated with the region (Earendil through his father Tuor). Lake Mithrim lay in the east of Hithlum; about its shores the divided hosts of the Noldorin Elves made their encampments after their return to Middle-earth (The Silmarillion Chapter 13, Of the Return of the Noldor).
