:Fastred is a major character in the Rohan storyline. At twenty-four years old in 3019, he is the Thane of the city of Snowbourn, and the Reeve of the Sutcrofts. He is the son of Dagred, who was killed by orcs only nine months ago and Théodhild, sister-daughter of King Theoden. He is married to Elflád, daughter of Elfhelm, and the two have a son named Folcred who is but one year old. A great warrior, Fastred is also stubborn and rash, always seeking to avenger the orcs for the death of his father. When Eomer orders all people to abandon Eastemnet and move across the Entwash river, Fastred openly defies his order, keeping his family in the city and leading his riders against the raiding parties of the Mordor orcs instead. His rashness is exploited by Crúmgam, a man of Mordor, who opently taunts Fastred by the side of his father's grave, leading to a reckless charge which leads several riders dead. Crúmgam then presents Fastred a token of cloth from his son's blanket, causing the Reeve to despair when Crúmgam launches a direct attack on the Snowbourn. However, other Reeves of Sutcrofts come with aid and drive Crúmgam back, after which it is revealed that the child is safe, taken to Edoras by Théodhild against her son's wishes. When the Lords of the Eastemnet hold a council on what to do about Grima Wormtongue's growing influence on the King, Fastred suggest riding on Edoras directly, which the other Lords deem too bold even for him.
