Estë was a one of the Valier and the spouse of the Vala Irmo(Lórien). She was the Healer of All Hurts and Weariness. Estë was generally known as Estë the Pale.

Attributes

Estë the Gentle, one of her other names, had the power to heal and to give rest and cure for all hurts and weariness. Her favourite place was an island on the tree-shadowed lake of Lórellin in the Gardens of Lórien where she slept during the day. She was always clad in grey.[1]

History

Estë dwelt with her spouse in the gardens of Lórien, the fairest of all Arda. There were many Maiar who served her and her spouse the Vala Irmo, who was the Master of Dreams and Desires. Estë and her spouse Irmo, tended to the Elves of Valinor, who drew refreshment from their fountains, and even the Valar would come to find repose and ease from the burdens of Arda.[1]

Tilion, a Maia hunter of the Vala Oromë, had often come to the gardens of Lórien to lay by the pools of Estë and dream while bathed in Telperion's silver light. Tilion loved silver, and therefore begged, after the destruction of the Two Trees, to tend for ever the last Silver Flower of Telperion" and Tilion then was charged to steer the Moon.[2] Varda, Queen of the Valar, was in charge of the skies and their elements. Varda was also known as the "Queen of the Stars" and she originally intended to place the Sun and Moon in the sky, one travelling from the east and one from the west, to allow for a mingling of their lights. Tilion, however, was too eager to be near Arien and strayed from his course. Estë and her spouse Irmo spoke against this, for with the lights of the Sun and Moon together, the stars were hidden and sleep and rest had been banished from the Earth. Thus, Queen Varda changed it to allow a time of "shadow and half-light."[2] Thereafter, the Moon and the Sun would each take turns travelling through the sky as the other lay in Ekkaia.[2]

Etymology

Estë (Q, pron. [ˈeste]) means "rest".[3] The same Root, EZDE, also yielded her Sindarin name, Îdh (pron. [iːð])[4] and the Nandorin Eord.[5]
