Eärnil I (T.A. 736[1] – 936,[2] aged 200 years) was the thirteenth King of Gondor and the second Ship-king.
History
In T.A. 913, he succeeded his uncle Tarannon Falastur, who died childless. Eärnil was the son of Tarannon's brother Tarciryan.[2] He continued with the expansionist maritime policy of his predecessor by constructing a great navy and repairing the ancient havens of Pelargir,[1] and then capturing the Haven of Umbar in T.A. 933.[3] He was tragically lost at sea in 936 near Umbar and was succeeded by his son Ciryandil.[4]
Etymology
Eärnil is Quenya, being a shortened form of Eärendil.[5]
