Dwaling was a village in the far Northern parts of the Eastfarthing of the Shire, just North of the hills of Scary.

Etymology

In A Tolkienian Mathomium[1], Mark Hooker argues cogently that the place name Dwaling is the name of the Tolkien Family Estate in The Shire. It is composed of Tolkien's own translation of his surname into Gothic (Dwalakoneis), truncated to the first closed syllable as is common in place names of this type, plus the ending –ing, which means "descendants of [name]".
