Durin VII, also known as Durin the Last,[3] was the last of the six reincarnations of Durin the Deathless.

The actions of Durin VII were prophesied long before he was born; his birth was apparently prophesied upon the accession of Dáin II after the Battle of Five Armies.[4]

Durin VII was the direct descendant of Thorin III Stonehelm (according to some sources, he was his son).[1]

He led Durin's folk from Erebor back to Khazad-dûm and restored the ancient kingdom sometime after Fo.A. 171. There they remained "until the world grew old and the Dwarves failed and the days of Durin's race were ended."[1]

One account states that the name Durin was a word for "king" in the language of the Men of the North in the early Second Age.[5]

Another account states that Durinn is one of the Dwarfs in the Dvergatal. The name means "Sleepy".[6]

Prince Durin is the son of King Thorin III Stonehelm. In the game's storyline other Dwarves have been given that name and yet proved not to be the Father of the Longbeards returned, so a major part of his motivation is to prove whether he truly is or will be Durin VII.
At the onset of the War of the Ring, Thorin III send Durin to the Iron Hills for his safety, where to his frustration the Prince had sat out the entire war in relative comfort. Seeking to prove himself, he follows a group of the Zhélruka dwarves on the pilgrimage to Ered Mithrin, where they believe their old strongholds can be reclaimed following Sauron's downfall.
