Durin VI (Third Age 1731 – 1980, lived 249 years) was King of Durin's folk and ruled the great Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm. During the end of his reign the Dwarves, while mining for mithril, awoke a Balrog that had hidden itself deep beneath the city. The monster began to work havoc on Khazad-dûm and slew Durin. Since the surviving dwarves were unsure what type of monster they faced, the Balrog was simply called "Durin's Bane". Durin's son Náin I was slain shortly thereafter and his grandson led Durin's folk away from their ancestral home.
