Elessar and Arwen by Michael Kaluta, showing an idea of the crown similar to Tolkien's

The Crown of Gondor was a tall, jewelled and winged helm that served the Kings of Gondor as a crown, which, combined with the Sceptre of Anárion, was the symbol of the Kingship. Tolkien described it in his letters as similar to the crown of the Pharoahs of Egypt. After the loss of the last King, Eärnur, it was held in the Houses of the Dead for nearly a thousand years, until a rightful heir (Elessar Telcontar) came forward at the end of the Third Age.
