". . . and Faramir opened the casket, and he held up an ancient crown. It was shaped like the helms of the Guards of the Citadel, save that it was loftier, and it was all white, and the wings at either side were wrought of pearl and silver in the likeness of the wings of a sea-bird, for it was the emblem of kings who came over the Sea; and seven gesm of adamant were set in the circlet, and upon its summit was set a single jewel the light of which went up like a flame."
The Lord of the Rings, The Steward and the King

The Crown of Gondor was a tall, jewelled and winged helm that served the Kings of Gondor as a crown, and was the symbol of the Kingship. Tolkien described it in his letters as similar to the crown of the Pharoahs of Egypt. After the loss of the last King, Eärnur, it was held in the Houses of the Dead for nearly a thousand years, until a rightful heir (Aragorn II Telcontar) came forward at the end of the Third Age.
