The Dúnedain of the North were the descendants of the Númenóreans that survived the Downfall of Númenor and landed in the north of Middle-earth. There, under Elendil, they founded the kingdom of Arnor. They were the cousins of the Dúnedain of the South. Since Arnor was destroyed while its sister kingdom Gondor survived, the Dúnedain of the South were referred to as the Dúnedain.
