Bucklebury Ferry
Bucklebury Ferry was a raft-ferry at the main crossing point of the River Brandywine from the Shire to Buckland, about ten miles south of the Brandywine Bridge.[1][2] From the Causeway on the west bank, two tall white posts marked the entrance of the lane;[3] the straight lane ran about a hundred yards, edged with large white-washed stones, leading to a gangway and broad wooden landing-stage. Near the bank were some bollards, and two high posts with lanterns.[1]
On the east side the bank was steep and a winding lane climbed up from the landing. The ferry-boat itself was large and flat.[1]
The lane was well-kept and every night someone lit the lanterns on the lamp-posts.[1]
Other versions of the legendarium
The Ferry was said to be twenty miles south of the Bridge by Merry[1] but this was corrected to ten in the 50th Anniversary Edition.[4]
Portrayal in adaptations
2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
- Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took all get on the ferry (at Merry's suggestion) in order to evade the pursuing Nazgûl and then ride it to Bree.
