Arvegil (T.A. 1553[1] - 1743,[2] died aged 190) was the eleventh king of Arthedain, succeeding his father, Argeleb II, upon his death in 1670.
History
During his father's reign, Arvegil saw events that would shape the history of Middle-earth, including the foundation of the Shire. He was eighty-three years old (no great age for one of the Dúnedain) when the Great Plague came out of the south and ravaged Eriador, but the seat of the Kings at Fornost in the north was little affected.[3]
Arvegil lived for one hundred and ninety years, longer than any of his descendants until Aragorn.[4] By the standards of his own ancestors, though, this was an early death. Of all the northern Kings before Arvegil - excepting those slain in battle - only two had lived less than two hundred years: his father Argeleb II and his grandfather Araphor.
Arvegil ruled Arthedain for seventy-three years, and was succeeded by his son, who ruled as Arveleg II, upon his death in 1743.[2]
Etymology
Arvegil is Sindarin for "Royal Sword" from ara- meaning "royal, king", and megil (becoming lenited to vegil) meaning "sword".

Arvegil's age discrepancy
The reference to Aragorn being the longest-lived of his line since Arvegil is retained in the post-1993 revisions of Appendix A in which Aragorn's age is amended to 210 (reflecting 120 years of the Fourth Age rather than 100 being added to the last 90 years of the Third Age), and thus it may be imputed that Arvegil's age was revised upward (and his birth year backward) by at least twenty years, as if the ages in "The Heirs of Elendil" are regarded as correct, Aragorn would instead have been the longest-lived since at least Celebrindor (who died at 210) if not his father Celepharn (who was years older). All published editions of The Appendices concur that
- Arvegil died in T.A. 1743;
- Aragorn was born 90 years before the end of the Third Age;
- Aragorn was the longest-lived of the Line of Isildur since Arvegil.
Therefore the birth year attributed to Arvegil in "The Heirs of Elendil" would remain uncorrected and would represent a contradiction.
