- 1940 - Actor John Hurt is born.
- 1954 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 143.
- 1956 - The New York Times Book Review publishes W.H. Auden's review of The Return of the King, "At the End of the Quest, Victory".
- 2003 - Tolkien's eldest son John Francis Reuel Tolkien dies.
