- 1965 - The fifteenth and last episode of the Princess-serialization of The Hobbit is published.
- 2005 - The final day of the first "The One Ring Celebration".
- 2020 - Christopher Tolkien dies.

The text mentions that Frodo sees the "sickle Moon". According to astronomy, this moon should really be exactly half-full in 3019, rather than sickle, eight days after the full moon.[2]
