- 1917 - Hans Conried, the man who voiced the part of Thorin II Oakenshield in Rankin/Bass' The Hobbit, is born.
- 1953 - J.R.R. Tolkien gives the W.P. Ker Lecture at Glasgow University on the religious themes adultery, temptation and repentance in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
- 1962 - Tom Kane, who would voice Gandalf in Vivendi's The Fellowship of the Ring (game), is born.
- 2007 - Tolkien Studies: Volume 4 is published.

- Battle of the Field of Celebrant:
- The Balchoth and a great host of Orcs attack the inferior host of Gondor on the Field of Celebrant.
- All seems lost for Gondor until the Eotheod under leadership of Eorl come to its aid.
- Together with the Eotheod Gondor is victorious and Cirion, steward of Gondor, gives Calenardhon to Eorl which becomes the later Rohan.
