1953 - J.R.R. Tolkien gives the W.P. Ker Lecture at Glasgow University on the religious themes adultery, temptation and repentance in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

  - The Balchoth and a great host of Orcs attack the inferior host of Gondor on the Field of Celebrant.
  - All seems lost for Gondor until the Eotheod under leadership of Eorl come to its aid.
  - Together with the Eotheod Gondor is victorious and Cirion, steward of Gondor, gives Calenardhon to Eorl which becomes the later Rohan.
